Mustapha Said is an Egyptian Oud player and a specialist in Oriental Recitation. He is usually accompanied by three musicians and a chorus line and presents a very special rendition of “Roubaiyat Al Khayyam” in a heart stopping performance. He is undoubtedly one of the last performers of this genre.
Notwithstanding the use of Wasla as a format for this album, it does not adhere to its minute formational details as the known musical forms are rarely used all through, making it an attempt at interpretational recreation taken from the original tradition more willingly than being merely a meticulous reproduction of this tradition.
Omar al-Khayyam is Ghayath Eddin Abul Fath Umar Ibn Ibrahim al-Khayyam al-Nissaburi. Born in Nishapur in 1040 (433Hejri) died in 1123 AD
Al-Khayyam excelled in the sciences of his time and traveled to most of the Islamic world. He is considered one of the most esteemed scientists of mathematics, astronomy and philosophy. He is the first who resolved mathematic equations of the third and fourth degrees. He also realized an astronomic calendar that is considered the most precise in the middle ages.
Al-Khayyam was not known as a poet and quatrains’ writer beyond his circles of friends and acquaintances. The quatrains remained unknown and only started to spread some 200 years after his death. They were not translated into languages until the mid-19th century.
The quatrains spread in the whole world and were translated into 45 languages. Today, al-Khayyam is one of the most significant men of literature worldwide. The Japanese Cultural Committee has considered the quatrains of al-Khayyam as one of the most important 100 books in the history of humanity.
