Lebanese jazz composer Toufic Farroukh talks about how he came to his new-old sound

One of Lebanon's most significant contributions to the international music landscape (aside from dabkeh, of course) is "Oriental jazz" a clever blend of Western jazz modalities and improvisation conventions with those of the Arabic classical tradition.
One of the pioneers of Lebanon's Oriental jazz, along with Ziad Rahbani and Rabih Abu Khalil, is Toufic Farroukh. That's not to say he's very fond of the term.

Undoubtably one of the most prolific Jazz musicians, Toufic Farroukh has left imprints everywhere; from theater to the cinema and even in contemporary dance. "Cinema Beyrouth", Toufic Farroukh's fifth album summarizes his journey in 13 tracks. From the soundrack of "Falafel" (Michel Kamoun, 2006) to Dima Aljundi's "Bonne a vendre" not to forget "Terra Incognita" (Ghassan Salhab, 2004) and "Histoire d'un retour" (Jean Claude Codsi, 1994), "Cinema Beyrouth" celebrates music and cinema.

Le label musical Forward Music lance son nouveau concept DRM, Democratic Republic of Music. Salle de concert située en plein cœur de Hamra où l’on peut écouter de la bonne musique dans une atmosphère décontractée, DRM ouvre ses portes le 1er juin 2011. Une programmation de choix avec un line-up d’artistes dont certains noms sont produits par le label. Toufic Farroukh ouvre le mois inugural de DRM, les 2 et 3 juin. Il sera suivi, le 4 juin, par Charbel Rouhana, Tania Saleh le 9 juin, Nemr Bou Nassar le 10 juin et Issa Ghandour le 11 juin. Suivront Stanley Jordan’s Trio le 16 juin, Ziyad Sahab le 17 juin, Tony Allen le 18 juin, Kareyce Fotso le 23 juin, Soumaya Baalbaki le 24 juin et enfin Joey de Francesco Trio le 25 juin.
